Joseph Shabason is a multi-instrumentalist (sax, flute, keys), composer and recording artist. After graduating as a saxophone major from the University of Toronto Jazz Performance program in 2006 he went on to play and tour in the bands Destroyer, The War On Drugs, Andre Ethier and DIANA. Two albums that he has recorded on (Kaputt and Poison Season) have been shortlisted for the Polaris Prize and the self-titled album from his own band DIANA has been long-listed for the Polaris. Kaputt was voted the No.2 album of the year by Pitchfork Media and Poison Season was also nominated for a Juno in 2015. Besides touring and playing in original projects Joseph has also done a lot of composing for television and commercials.

In 2017 he was commissioned by Hot Docs to write the music for their documentary on the Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms and he is just finished scoring Yung Chang’s doc on Canadain Wrestler Kenny Omega that aired on TSN. He also composed all the music for CBC’s new news podcast Front Burner. He is a session player and has recorded saxophone and flute and keyboard for The War On Drugs, Rodney Graham, Austra, Sandro Perri, Andre Ethier, Jill Barber, Hannah Georgas, The Born Ruffians, Allie X, Matt Barber, The Fembots and many more. He has released the album Aytche under his own name on Western Vinyl Records.

The Anne EP is the afterword to Joseph Shabason’s acclaimed 2018 harmonic suite Anne through which he examined and processed his mother’s struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Employing a small supporting cast that includes vocalist Dan Bejar (Destroyer) and guitarist Thomas Gill (Owen Pallett), Anne EP spotlights the Toronto saxophonist as he builds empathic tropospheres of woodwinds and synthesizers, deepening the sentiment established by the EP’s companion album, which was released in November 2018. The detail and idiosyncrasy beneath the material’s dawn-of-the-CD-era sheen, elevates Shabason’s work far beyond mere aesthetic exercise, cementing jazz, ambient sound design, and new age revivalism into a timely new genre all his own.
