bsd.u: Mental Health/BesideVJung
Duchamp: OK no fucking about let’s go deep inner
Jab) Is music your main form of self-expression? Are you compelled to make music?
Bsd.u : Yes, definitely. I’m a really quiet person and have always had a lot to say but can never find the right words to describe certain moods or feelings. Music kind of breaks that barrier and rather than talking to people, they can listen to things I’ve created during my thought process while alone. Even with no words, music can say a lot. I’m kind of addicted to making music rather than compelled. I’m always thinking about it or doing it so I’m inspired 24/7 stoked to start a new beat or song.
Left Hook) What particularly bothers you about being a human being these days?
Bsd.u : Negative people that don’t contribute anything or create anything yet criticize everything that they don’t understand. That’s about it, I surround myself with good people and drop negative people.
Jab) Bong half full or half empty?
Bsd.u : Half full.
Uppercut) Do this http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp and report back
Bsd.u : INFP
Introvert(83%) iNtuitive(38%) Feeling(25%) Perceiving(33%)
• You have strong preference of Introversion over Extraversion (83%)
• You have moderate preference of Intuition over Sensing (38%)
• You have moderate preference of Feeling over Thinking (25%)
• You have moderate preference of Perceiving over Judging (33%)
INFPs live primarily in a rich inner world of introverted Feeling. Being inward-turning, the natural attraction is away from world and toward essence and ideal. Feeling is caught in the approach- avoidance bind between concern both for people and for All Creatures Great and Small, and a psycho-magnetic repulsion from the same. The “object,” be it homo sapiens or a mere representation of an organism, is valued only to the degree that the object contains some measure of the inner Essence or greater Good.
Extraverted intuition faces outward, greeting the world on behalf of Feeling. What the observer usually sees is creativity with implied good will. Intuition spawns this type’s philosophical bent and strengthens pattern perception. It combines as auxiliary with introverted Feeling and gives rise to unusual skill in both character development and fluency with language.
Man hug at end of the bout) What makes you happy? When are you in ‘The Flow ?’
Bsd.u : Basically whenever something good happens. When I wake up to a bunch of BandCamp sales, when I look outside and it’s a nice day, when I get some emails from fans being cool. I don’t know man, just little things. As far at the ‘flow’ goes, sometimes I go a few days without making anything and work on other stuff. I’m always working though. If I’m watching shows or anime I’m listening for samples, If I’m playing videogames I’m listening to music, If I’m watching porn I’m beating off at around 140bpm. hahaha. I think of it like, every second I’m not trying to further myself some other dude is working harder than me and getting further ahead and I hate that feeling so I’m always working even if I’m not really working.
Duchamp: Hahaha choose another category…
Bsd.u : Ass/Tits/Make-ups/break-ups
Duchamp: Do you write more/make more beats/create when you are in/out/on the edge of a relationship?
Bsd.u : I actually find relationships fucking exhausting. I’ve only had one serious relationship and I was living with the girl. I wasn’t making beats, watching porn or eating cereal and watching cartoons at 4:20 am with a bong equipped. I was going to clubs, doing coke and hanging out with a bunch of attractive girls that did nothing but talk shit behind each others backs. The sex was the bomb though. I think I need to stay single for a while and just focus on myself or at least find a girl that’s normal. I’m not looking though. I’d rather spend my time on my music. I want to make myself happy cause’ fuck bitches amirite? I think being near the end/at the end of that relationship was perfect because I came back, got a little more serious with my music and increased the numbers on my SoundCloud page by at least 10x. If you’re experiencing extreme emotions, you get some feels in your music and hopefully people get some of that. It sucks that it ended yeah but now people listen to my music and I got a cat out of it.
Duchamp: OK, next topic please sir?
Bsd.u : Weed/Coke/Mushrooms/Booze/and other drugs
Duchamp: Match the following drugs to the situations in which you feel they are best used? (To be clear on the rules – yes, you can use the same drug more than once.)
Bsd.u : Whenever you want to eat, sleep, listen to music or do anything involving anything.
Bsd.u : Best used as an escape mechanism if you’re fucked up on any other drug. It’s like the Red Bull of drugs, it takes you from fucked up to functioning no matter how fucked up you are. LOL.
Bsd.u : Try them. Trust me.
Bsd.u : Drinking is pretty stupid. I usually drink some beer when I’m alone or with a couple people. If I drink when I’m out, I can’t handle my shit. I’m surprised I haven’t been punched in the face.
Other drugs of your choice
Bsd.u : Salvia – Don’t try it. Trust me. Unless you want to know some crazy shit that you probably don’t want to know.
Painkillers/Lean – Opiates are nice. My favourite. You basically just listen to music or watch movies while trying your hardest not to nod off so you can enjoy the high. Very fun if you can handle your shit, just don’t get addicted to fucking codeine and cry on twitter about being a codeine addict like Gucci Mane.
Duchamp: Keep going!
Bsd.u : Anime
Duchamp: Talk to me about Shinichiro Watanabe please?
Bsd.u : Aside from making my 2 favourite anime’s I don’t know much about him. Samurai Champloo and Nujabes and Cowboy Bebop has a lot of jazz in it. Hip-hop from my favourite producer and jazz, he knew what he was doing. My favourite piece from Cowboy Bebop is Goodnight Julia. Rain outside, drunk girl alone at the bar, smooth jazz, cigarettes. I’ve been into anime/manga since like 5th grade and was in the closet about it for so long but it’s like… cool or something now? I don’t know tbh the only reason I got into it at that age was for the nudity and looking at drawings of boobs and all the nosebleeds during reading time was badass. At an older age I can appreciate the art a lot more and actually understand what’s happening. My favourite manga’s when I was a kid were ‘GetBackers’ and ‘Shaman King’
Duchamp: One thing I didn’t know about the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack/music is that it was produced by Rudy Van Gelder whaaaaaaaaat! That’s fkn RVG who produced all the big Blue Note Jazz sessions back in the day! word.
We should probly do some music talk and stop talking about vagina’s eh?
Bsd.u : Haha yeah man ask away
Duchamp: Ok, let’s start with your music collection and influences:
u vinyl, tape, digi man?
Bsd.u : I don’t limit myself. I’ve sampled my VHS player directly to my 404 and i’ve made trap beats with presets on digital synths. I prefer a warm lo-fi/analog sound and usually run things through hardware but not always. Depends on the sound I’m going for I guess.
Duhcamp: No1 tip for what people might have missed if they didn’t live on SC & what’s your album of the year so far?
Bsd.u : SoundCloud has been my #1 site for 4 or 5 years. It’s more popular than it’s ever been now. I guess my number 1 tip for people new to it is don’t judge people by how many listens or likes they have. Some of my inspirations when I first started making beats still only have around 1-2k followers and I still consider them as inspirations and I owe them a huge thanks for helping me find my sound. Lots of them were really nice and answered a lot of questions I had about what to buy and gave me tips. KIYANI, anyone from SLF tapes (rip), cyril snare, BIXEL, deepee, CULP, broke/, aaron maxwell. Listen to them. My album of the year so far is all of j^p^n’s BandCamp releases so far. I’m a huge fan of his work and somehow stumbled across his page when he had around 50 followers.
Who’s in your crew/team/imaginary friend’s collektiv. You live in Vancouver right? You have a thing out there? (eg regular beatmaking nights, hangouts etc) where should we go if we are passing through your part of town?
Bsd.u : So I’ve got like 2 friends irl that are really chill we play video games and do drugs together whenever we hang out. My irl crew is Howie Wonder, WHIPPED CREAM and Ashlu, I wanna meet DuqueNuquem too. They’re all in my city and make dope beats. Imaginary/internet crew is everyone that pretends to like me on Twitter and lots of girls that I’ll probably never meet that show me their goods. I have talked quite a bit with some SoundCloud people too, like j^p^n, bugseed, will, GRiMM Doza and Sabata. I live in Victoria on Vancouver Island. If anyone is passing through Vic you probably won’t see me, I only leave the house to buy cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and arizonas. I’m pretty anti-social too, not shy or have social anxiety or any of that shit i’m actually just anti-social as fuck so this is nice to be asked questions and stuff. I’ve only ever made beats with Howie Wonder and me made 5 beats a day for 3 days, it was a lot of work and a lot of cigarettes. If you’re an 8/10 girl or higher then I’ll meet up with you. I really have no interest in chillin with people unless they have drugs, make music or have a vagina.
Duchamp: Hahahaha. Fk. Haha. I’m gna destroy all your music except 2 things, what you clutching?
Bsd.u : The bugseed collab and the [late night bumps] mix. If everything got wiped I could easily start fresh with no worries tbh. It’s dope starting to build up a bit of a catalog though.
Duchamp: Jazz, talk to me?
Bsd.u : I’ve always liked jazz but I’m really picky within the genre. I like the more simple stuff, with just a few instruments. I don’t want to give away the artists I’m currently listening too because I’m getting lots of samples out of them still and they’re literally unheard of. Most tracks are 8 – 15 minutes long with just 3-4 instruments and lots of solo’s, you can literally take any part of each song and sample it into your own work and chop wherever you please. It just works. It’s perfection. I haven’t been listening to jazz for very long, probably the last year or so. Started off just liking things I could sample out of it but then it turned into a love of it’s own, for just the music. I can listen to it and enjoy it for what it is and think about making a beat with it while I listen. I swear Japan has got it down, so many artistic geniuses that only a few of them make it to the spotlight. An artist I can mention is Ryo Fukui. Probably been listening to him more than any other artist I know about for the past few months. His stuff is perfect, makes me think of Fall. A little bit of rain with different coloured leaves on the ground while you’re going for a walk with a cigarette in one hand and a cup of warm coffee in the other thinking about what it all means.
Duchamp: 3 most mind-blowbanging moments hearing new music?
Bsd.u : The first time I heard Dubstep (brostep) on an actual system I thought it was pretty fucking cool. The really chill trap stuff everyone is making right now definitely has my attention. I don’t know it’s hard to say what ‘blows my mind’ because I don’t listen to a lot of complex or heavy music, usually just really mellow stuff with lots of layers. Nooon is killing it right now, I’m really impressed with his stuff. j^p^n, mentioned for like the 100th time blew my mind the first time I heard of him. Wun two always impresses me. I think that’s more than 3? I’m hungry.
Duchamp: Where did you get that swang? I’m talking particularly about when.ur.gon ?
Bsd.u : I’ve always loved really heavy swing, I’ve listened to a lot of Dilla. like for 2 years that’s probably one of the only artists I listened to. On the track ‘when ur gone’ I programmed some drums, put them on my 404 and then chopped samples over them with my 404. I was sitting outside when I made that beat and that’s why the swings so heavy/ may be a little messy.
Duchamp: When people ask you what type of music you make, wtf do you say?
Bsd.u : That’s a really good question, I don’t really fit into a specific genre and I’m not making stuff most people are. It’s a good thing I guess. I’d describe my sound as instrumental / hip-hop / experimental / lo-fi / sample-based music but genres are just there to help you sell your music to people who like similar artists. In general conversation I’d just say I make beats.
Duchamp: what would you like to do next, if you couldn’t possibly fail and had all the resources in the world or some hippy type sht?
Bsd.u : Honestly, probably nothing. Seriously if I had financial freedom, I’d do absolutely nothing. Like that movie office space. For real though I’d probably build a really dope studio with all vintage gear and just spend the rest of my life in that room.
Duchamp: There are a lot of rumours that Soundcloud is gna get eaten by corporations and made into their bitchgimp. What does a post SC beatscene look like?
Bsd.u : This is what I would think would happen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSq0qyYWKG8
Duchamp: OK last couple, ask yourself the question you most want to be asked and then answer the question you wish you never got asked?
Bsd.u : What is your favourite cartoon?
I can’t think of a question I wouldn’t be comfortable answering tbhy
Duchamp: Ah yes, we conclude this Pullitzer prize winning exploration into the profound innerlife and musical output of bsd.u beats by asking him what is your favourite cartoon? Hahaha I did a lil dribble on my mac hahaha! Go on then:
What is your favourite cartoon?
Seasons 1-2 of The Boondocks, some of three is good. 4 is not good.
