Another  month, another fine residency on Frission. The sun might be setting a little earlier in the sky as we transition into fresher Autumn days but for the month of September we are keeping the Summer party alive with a cocktail of colourful tropical vibes.

Our resident for September is Denis Faneites aka Radio Hobo: a crate digger, illustrator and DJ based in Berlin with German-Venezuelan roots. radiohobo_pano_1-1

He considers himself a crate digger since he started buying hip-hop vinyl back in 1996/97. It wasn’t until 2012 that he started DJ’ing in Berlin-Kreuzberg, in a bar which belonged to a friend of his. There he held a DJ residency every weekend for around 2 years. Back then it was vinyl only (as it remains today) spinning soul, funk, jazz and reggae.
“The location wasn’t that big so there was no place to dance, so i played more ‘background music’. That leads to where i am now (since i found out that i like to make people dance): going back to my roots, my heritage and playing more tropical tunes. That can be bossa nova, cumbia, zouk, afrobeat, highlife or funana. It fits me and my tropical approach in terms of what I am doing as an illustrator and painter. The Music inspires my Art and vice versa.”

In October, Radio Hobo will play at the first underground Mindelo festival in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde Islands, together with Celeste Mariposa and Romy Romualdo. His hope is for a chance to play in more countries, where they feel what he feels when the needle hits the record. Radio Hobo’s future plans are to have a monthly opportunity in Berlin, to share the tropical treasures found over the years and even to throw a party every month.
